Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student needs to have a good knowledge of the historical Latin morphology and syntax.
Target skills and knowledge:: The aim of this course is to show the relation between Latin and the other indo-european languages and to outline the historical development of the Latin from the beginning (earliest texts date back to VII century B.C.) until the 'Proto'-Romance.
Course unit contents: The aim is to offer an overview of the historical development of the Latin language from the early inscriptions and literature until the literary works of VI century A.D.
Planned learning activities: a)The Tongues of Ancient Italy. Linguistic and textual remarks about some Latin inscriptions and some significant inscriptions coming from Oscan- and Umbrian Speaking areas. The Italic 'koiné', VII-V century B.C.. Uniformity, variety, and interference in the Latin and Italic epigraphy, IV-II century B.C. The early literature. Origin and development of the literary Latin: forms and genres. The classical Latin. The Latin in the Early Empire. Late Latin and Early Romance.
b) Horace in love: readings from the 'Carmina'.
