Syllabus
Prerequisites: Classes can be attended also by students without particular skills either on computer usage and computer science theory.
Target skills and knowledge:: The course aims at providing the students with a background in computer science, for a more conscious usage of computer tools. After a first part that creates a common basis on fundamental concepts in computer science, the lectures concentrate on more specialistic subjects, related to the syllabus of the course of studies, from the representation of multimedia information to information retrieval, including a part con computer security.

Class lectures will be integrated by laboratory exercises.
Course unit contents: Computers are central in most of the working actvities, beyond the simple use of word-processors and spreadsheets. It is important to have the background knowledge to make choices regarding information formats, security, required hardware and so on.
Lectures aims at promoting the digital culture, contributing to create more conscious users.

- Computer security

- Information retrieval
- Digital libraries

Additional notes about suggested reading:: The lectures makes available the digital slides to the students.
Teaching methods: Lectures are computer-based, and slides are made available to students.
Laboratory exectises integrate the theory.
Assessment criteria: The final exam is done on the computer divided in two parts: closed and open questions. Exercises are evaluated as well, through computer tools developed by the lecturer.
