Prerequisites: Required course: Medical semeiotics and clinical methodology
Target skills and knowledge: • Knowledge and skills for recognizing the main disorders of domestic animals
• Knowledge of pathophysiology and symptoms of the main diseases and syndromes of domestic animals
• Knowledge of the use of auxiliary techniques for diagnosing animal diseases/syndromes
• Knowledge of the principles of deontological code for the veterinary profession
• Knowledge of the rules regarding the civil and criminal liability of the veterinary profession.
• Knowledge of the legislation regarding animal welfare and health
Examination methods: Written examination (multiple choice question and open answer question) at the end of the course
Assessment criteria: Evaluation of the knowledge and skills of the student in recognizing and diagnosing the main internal medicine diseases of the animals as well as of the national and EU legislation regarding the veterinary profession.
Course unit contents: Knowledge of etiology, pathophysiology, clinical signs and diagnosis of veterinari internal medicine.
• Respiratory system: Diseases of the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lung, pleura, mediastinum and diaphragm.
• Cardio-circulatory system: Congenital cardiac disease; cardiac arrhythmias; diseases of the pericardium, myocardium, endocardium and great vessels; heart failure.
• Hemopoietic system: Anemia, Leukemia, haemostatic disorders.
• Digestive system: Diseases of the mouth, esophagus, stomach and forestomach, small and large bowel, peritoneum, liver and exocrine pancreas.
• Musculoskeletal system: Diseases of the muscles and bones.
• Urinary system: Diseases of kidney, ureters, bladder and urethra; renal failure.
• Endocrine system: Diseases of the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands and exocrine pancreas.
• Metabolic diseases: Chetosis, tetany and hypocalcemia.

Veterinary legislation
Theoretical part:
• Deontology;
• Legal and administrative liability for the veterinary profession;
• Sanctions and jurisdiction;
• Identification and registration of the animals;
• Medical informed consent;
• Privacy legislation;
• Animal welfare;
• Animal cruelty and dangerous dogs legislation;
• Legislation, Registration and Control Procedures for Veterinary Medicinal Products
• Safety and health at work;
• Animal Transport.

Practical session:
Search of UE and Italian laws in on-line databases; Exercise in writing documents including veterinary prescriptions, registrations and documents for animal transport.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course include:
40 hours of theoretical lectures of veterinary internal medicine
15 hours of theoretical lectures of veterinary legislation
5 hours of practical activity of veterinary legislation
The course includes the “hands on” practical activity of the “Tirocinio” in Internal medicine under the supervision of a teacher
