Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student should have the basic knowledge of physiology and anatomy of the main organs and apparatus.

Required foundation courses: Veterinary Physiology and ethology 1, Veterinary general Pathology
Target skills and knowledge: Expected learning results: State objective(s) of theoretical part of teaching in this subject
The aim of this course is to help the students to acquire the fundamental knowledge as well as the practical capability, to search and recognize clinical signs of diseases of internal medicine interest.
General approach to the internal medicine pathology and clinical cases. Approach to the animal patient and basic methods for the physical examination.
Signalment and History. General physical examination
The module is structured in order to complete, together with those of Veterinary Medical Pathology and Veterinary instrumental Diagnostic in Internal Medicine

Students have to learn the common hematological and biochemical parameters’ meaning about the most frequent organic patologies.

Students have to be able to manage radiologic and ultrasound instruments to make a diagnosis. Moreover he has to know basic clinics endoscopy.
Examination methods: Oral examination at the end of the course.
Assessment criteria: The student will be valued on the basis of the acquired knowledge.
Course unit contents: Students must acquire methodological ability and practical skills to perform a physical examination of domestic animals and recognize clinical signs. Moreover, students must be able to perform collateral clinical examinations at a basic level.

Veterinary Medical Semiology
Frontal lessons (2 CFU):
Scheme CLINICAL EXAMINATION
Semiotics general. Methodology of clinical examination and diagnostic procedure. The student is guided in the clinic visit following a rigorous process that possible to identify all the alterations identified before considering particular organ or organs affected.

Physical Examination General
Particular Physical Examination:
- DIGESTIVE SYSTEM and THE LIVER

- CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (outline)

Practical part (2 CFU):
The practical exercises are performed on cattle, horse and dog.
The student learns to perform the manual work required to address the physical examination of the particular apparatus (inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation). General physical examination. Physical Examination particular of the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, urinary, and integumentary. Venous blood sampling, sampling of urine (urethral catheterization, cystocentesis)

Veterinary Medical Pathology
Frontal lessons (1 CFU):
1. Clinical meaning of the Clinical Pathology in Veterinary
2. Medicine
3. The complete blood count
4. Anaemia
5. Hepatic disorders
6. Pancreatic and gastrointestinal disorders
7. Urinary disorders
8. Hemostatic abnormalities
9. Muscular disorders
10. Lipid disorders.

Lab sessions (1 CFU):
Carrying out and reading of blood smears and urinary samples; use of laboratory techniques for hemato-biochemical determinations in order to the diagnosis of the common clinical diseases.

Veterinary Instrumental Diagnostic in Internal Medicine
Frontal lessons (1 CFU)
Production mechanisms of X-ray and their use for diagnosis; management of X-ray instrument and position of patient.. Production mechanisms of ultrasounds and their use for diagnosis; management of scan instrument and position of patient. Theoretical fundaments of endoscopy.
Practical part (1 CFU)
Activities with X-ray instruments and in scan room.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course includes:
lectures = 50 hours
exercises/laboratorio = 30 hours

The Course is completed with practical training during Tirocinio, an hands-on activity performed under the supervision of a teacher.
