Syllabus
Prerequisites: Learning will take advantage of the previous knowledge of the classification and nomenclature of the main classes of chemical compounds.
Target skills and knowledge:: The course aims to bring the student to know:
-the properties of atoms and molecules and the principles underlying their behavior in the biological systems
-the properties and reactivity of the various classes of organic compounds
-the general aspects of the structure of the biological macromolecules
Course unit contents: At the end of the Course the student will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of:

Part I
Structure and properties of atoms, mechanisms of molecule formation and interactions.
- Solution state with particular reference to water as solvent.
- Parameters regulating chemical reactions.
- Chemical equilibria.
- Biological meaning of oxidation-reduction reactions.

Part II
Structure and basal properties of:
- Hydrocarbons.
- Carbon compounds containing oxygen.
- Carbon compounds containing nitrogen.
- Carbon compounds containing sulfur
- Isomerism
- Multifunctional compounds

Part III
Structure and basal properties of:
- Carbohydrates
- Amino acids and proteins
- Chromoproteins
- Glycoproteins
- Lipids and fat-soluble vitamins
Planned learning activities: PART I
-Structure and properties of atoms, molecule formation and interactions
Atom structure, molecular orbitals and periodic table of elements. Atomic, molecular and equivalent weights. Chemical bonds and valence. Resonance. Molecular orbitals, molecule hybridization and geometry. Van der Waals forces, dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bond. Isotopes in biology and medicine.

-Solution state
Solubility, hydrophobic bond, concentration expression of a solution: molarity, normality, mole fraction. Colligative properties, degree of dissociation. Concept of acid and base.

-Parameters regulating the course of a chemical reaction
Mechanism and balance of a reaction, kinetic factors that influence the rate of a reaction. Activation energy and catalysis. Chemical thermodynamics. Enthalpy, entropy and free energy. Spontaneous occurrence of a reaction.

-Chemical equilibria
Law of mass action, chemical equilibria in solution, ionic equilibria, solubility product. Water as electrolyte, pH. Neutralization, titration curve of an acid, buffer systems, buffer systems in blood.

-Importance of biological oxidation-reduction
Reactions of oxidation-reduction, oxidation number: electrochemical cells; standard electrode potential, potentiometric measurement of pH.

PART II
-Hydrocarbons
Alkanes, alkenes and alkynes: structure and classification, IUPAC nomenclature, main reactions. Conjugated dienes; polymerization; polienes of biochemical interest. Aromatic hydrocarbons and resonance. The electrophilic substitution. Alkyl halides, polarity and reactions of.

-Carbon compounds containing oxygen
Alcohols and phenols: nomenclature, functional group, reactions as acids or as bases, oxidation of alcohols and phenols. Ethers: physical and chemical properties.
Aldehydes and ketones: nomenclature, functional group, mechanism of nucleophilic addition, aldol condensation, oxidation, reduction and the Cannizzaro reaction.
Carboxylic Acids: nomenclature, functional group, chemical reactions. Derivatives of carboxylic acids and their biological significance: halides, anhydrides, thioesters, esters and amides.

-Carbon compounds containing nitrogen and sulfur
Amines, basic properties and reactions, heterocyclic amines.
Thioalcohols, disulfides, thioethers, sulphonic acids.

-Isomerism
Structural isomers, conformers, cis-trans stereoisomers, optical stereoisomers; tautomerism.

-Multifunctional compounds
Polycarboxylic-acids, hydroxy-acids and keto-acids. Aminoalcohols.

PART III
Carbohydrates
Monosaccharides: structure, chemistry, reactions; derivatives. Reducing and non-reducing oligosaccharides. Omopolysaccharides. Heteropolysaccharides. Glycosaminoglycans.

-Amino acids and proteins
Amino acids: α-amino acids: optical stereoisomerism, pK, isoelectric point;
classification and properties. Peptide bond. Biologically active amino acids. Natural peptides. Proteins: purification, amino acid composition, mass. Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure. Post-synthetic modifications. Denaturation and protein folding. Organization of proteins: consensus sequences and structural domains. Fibrous and globular proteins. Examples of pathologies linked to alterations of proteins. Peptidic hormones.

-Chromoproteins and glycoproteins
Myoglobin and hemoglobin, heme structure. Hemoglobin: heme-globin binding, oxygenation, cooperativity and allosteric regulation, Bohr effect. Methemoglobin, cyanomethemoglobin, carboxyhemoglobin. Pathological hemoglobins. Glycoproteins. Proteoglycans.

-Lipids and fat-soluble vitamins
Simple lipids. Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Triacylglycerols. Phospholipids: glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids. Glycolipids. Isoprenoid compounds. Sterols and steroids. Chylomicrons and lipoproteins.
Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, K and E. Lipid composition of cell membranes and membrane transport.
