Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of the contents of the integrated courses of Clinical Methodology and Medical Surgical Specialties (from 1 to 4)
Target skills and knowledge: To be able to manage the decision-making process leading to the diagnosis utilizing the instruments of medical history, physical examination and laboratory and instrumental tests.
To be able to critically formulate a differential diagnosis in a patient with multiple pathologies.
The integrated course of Internal Medicine 1 falls between the integrated courses of Clinical Methodology and Medical Surgical Specialties (from 1 to 4) on one hand, and Internal Medicine 2 on the other and therefore is for the student the first approach to the clinically complex patient.
Applying the concept of clinical methodology and systematic medical pathology, the student must learn to understand the problems related to the management of each distinct clinical case, utilizing not only knowledge based on evidence medicine, but also the reasoned interpretation of the information referring to a specific patient. The aim of the 1st year of Internal Medicine program is to give the student the basis for the clinical approach to the various systematic pathologies, to the correct utilization of the diagnostic procedures (clinical and instrumental) especially with regard to a differential diagnosis, and, finally, to the diagnostic most appropriate conclusions.
Examination methods: Traditional lessons and clinical practice in wards
Assessment criteria: oral test
Course unit contents: Examining distinct clinical cases, the students will learn to have with the patient, in compliance with his characteristics, a correct relationship; to identify the principal aspects of the clinical presentation in order to uncover the presence of disease and to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis with evidence to confirm that hypothesis; to define the objectives that can be achieved by diagnosis in the frequent multidimensional complexity of the patients (young and especially elderly); the therapeutic approach is specifically treated in Internal Medicine 2.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Clinical cases will cover the most important and frequent systemic pathologies so that students will have a basic essential knowledge of an internist’s approach.
Systemic diseases treated in clinical cases will be all that are already considered in the Integrated courses of Medical Surgical Specialties 1, 2, 3, 4.
