Syllabus
Prerequisites:
Target skills and knowledge:: By th end of the course the students will acquire the basic conceptual knowledge and historiographical categories to understand Latin American history from the Iberian conquest to the present time and will be familiar with a few key transformations and fundamental thematics iussues.
Course unit contents: The course aims at analyzing the mains eras in the political, economic, and social history of Latin America.
Planned learning activities: The course aims at analyzing the mains eras in the political, economic, and social history of Latin America: the conquest and the early colonization; native peoples, demographic trends and reorientation of native cultures; the model of Habsburgic government and Creole self-rule; the eighteenth-century reforms; the crisis of Iberian monarchies and the independences; the contruction and crisis of liberal states; the role of the army and classic populisms; the Cold War era among revolutions and dictatorships; the debt crisis and the policies of adjustment; the new millennium.

Additional notes about suggested reading:: During class the teacher will advise what parts of the books in the bibliography should be studied.
Teaching methods: Lectures along with the analysis of documentary and iconographic sources of different kinds (slides, videos, ppt).
Assessment criteria: Students attending lessons in the current academic year will take a written exam in the summer exam session.
Exams will be oral in all the other exam sessions and for all the other categories of students (those not attending classes, those who have attended classes in previous academic years).
