Syllabus
Prerequisites: For a better comprehension of the subjects and of the methodologies, Iconography and iconology course attendance is recommended.
Target skills and knowledge:: Acquisition of interdisciplinary competences in order to improve identifying, description and interpretation of ‘evident, transparent and latent’ musical themes in the proposed images.
Course unit contents: 1. Introduction to the discipline: terminology, analysis methods, sources, themes.
2. Allegory of Music iconographical traditions in the Mediaeval Age and Renaissance.
3. A problematic example, between tradition and innovation: Dosso Dossi’s Allegory of Music.
Planned learning activities: 1. The study of the appropriate nomenclature and of the basic methodological instruments are accompanied by a review of the iconographical sources, from which musical subject matters may be drawn.
2. The proposed theme compares a series of symbolic representation types of fourteenth-to-sixteenth-century music and historical-literary and musical theory sources, which provoked the formation of the iconographical traditions inspiring such representations, in order to display problems about music and sound origins.
3. Scholars’ interpretations about Dosso Dossi’s Allegory of Music are examined in order to point out the continuity of some themes, in spite of the complexity and novelty of their revision by the artist and/or who commissioned his painting.
