Syllabus
Prerequisites: YEAR-LONG COURSE, from early October to mid-June.
The teaching of French language (level 3) for Linguistic and Cultural Mediation II and Modern Languages and Cultures III requires the sucessful completion of Basic French Language I (1 st year of degree) and Advanced French Language II (2 nd year of degree). In other words, it requires the acquisition of a good B1 level in its oral/written skills in comprehension/production. It also requires the deepening of microsyntactic structures of the French language, from both theorical and practical aspects. For the course in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation, the twofold approach (theory and practice) of translation followed during the previous year deserves the terminology for translation purposes module scheduled for the third year.
Target skills and knowledge:: At the end of the course, students of both degree courses (MCL, MZL) are supposed to master all the syntactic structures(simple and complex) of the French language, on the basis of a reliable state of art of research. They will be able to produce refined analysis of written texts, which is necessary to master translation skills. They will have enhanced their skills in technical translation. They are expected to have improved their oral skills, in terms of fluency and register-mastering, through the regular participation at the global simulation. Overall, they are supposed to achieve a strongB2 level.

For the course of Linguistic and Cultural Mediation, terminology research will become familiar with the ability to build the lexicon-grammar-specific technical and scientific areas to be considered.
Course unit contents: 1) MACROSYNTAX (I semester - Prof. Henrot): state of the art of theoretical knowledge regarding the types of language constructs and simple and complex sentences (parataxis, hypotaxis) of the French language; to a higher level of text composition, are studied in detail the class of connectives and the textual progression. Practical experiments of syntax analysis will be proposed according to a progressive programm for the duration of the module.

2) PRACTICAL TRAINING (semester I and II): ORAL EXPRESSION (Dr. Montfort): global simulation with compulsory participation and ongoing evaluation.
WRITING (Dr. Baldacci) aims to emprove and consolidate the translation techniques learned during the 2 nd year. The text corpus, given in class, is made up of articles from the French press (news, politics, culture, music, sports, economics, scientific and technical subjects, etc.).

3) TERMINOLOGY FOR TRANSLATION PURPOSE (theory and methodology) (for MZL, II semester - Prof. Soliman): The module examines the morphology and syntax of French lexical units (formation of the lexicon) and focuses on the terminological activities (analysis of specialized texts and terminology extraction, profiling data in a comparative French-Italian). Mode of assessment: oral.
Planned learning activities:

Sarà fornito, durante le lezioni. altro materiale bibliografico: (in formato digitale), --.
Teaching methods: 1) MACROSYNTAX: theoretical lecture with multimedia support, supplemented by collective interactions in the classroom and individual interactive on-line exercises.
2) TERMINOLOGY: theoretical lecture alternating with interactive exercises.
3) PRACTICAL TRAINING: ORAL: intensive interactive practice in the presence, in groups, after preparation, lexical and terminological argument into play. WRITTEN: individual translation and synthesis performance.
Assessment criteria: Assessment by the means of theoretical and practical tests.
1) The PRACTICAL TESTS provide a written and an oral test. Written exam : synthetical translation from French into Italian of 5 authentic technical-scientific documents. Oral exam ; discussions and arguments about the translation content.
2) The THEORETICAL TESTS. Written exam: linguistic knowledge of French syntactic structures. Oral exam: syntactic analysis of a random text. The terminological assessment gives rise to a specific oral test.

NOTE: You can not enroll in an examination session as long as the examination of the previous year has not been completed and recorded on the personal booklet. Tests provided during the course of ongoing activities or immediately following their conclusion are accessible.
Further information: La frequenza delle lezioni è caldamente raccomandata, essendo la lezione di lingua una palestra difficilmente sostituibile. Gli studenti che, per gravi motivi documentati, non possano frequentare le lezioni, sono invitati ad informarsi all'inizio del corso sui contenuti e sulle modalità delle prove: verrà dato loro accesso alla piattaforma virtuale che contiene materiale ed esercizi.
