Syllabus
Prerequisites: no prerequisites required
Target skills and knowledge:: the course, through the introduction of basic physics and chemistry, aims to make comprehensible the main physical and chemical phenomena that led to the design and use of analytical techniques most commonly used in cultural heritage. The introduction of certain chemical reactions will also explain the processes of production of some artistic and historical artifacts and their possible degradation.
Course unit contents: The activity will consider the basic physics through the development of wave-particle duality of each object. This evidence for identifying the phenomena occurring in the atoms when they are administered in the form of light energy, electrons or ions accidents. On this basis, we proceed by describing the main techniques of analysis useful for the analysis of cultural heritage samples.

From the atomic orbitals to the molecular orbitals

Light-matter interaction: XPS, UPS, Auger, UV-Vis, IR spectroscopies
Electron-matter interaction: techniques SEM, ESEM, SAM, EDS
Ion-matter interaction: IBA techniques (PIXE, PIGE, RBS)
Mass spectrometry and secondary ion (MS, SIMS)
