Prerequisites: The student has to know the basics on soil, climate, cultivation techniques, main crops
Examination methods: The final evaluation will be by means of oral exam and by means of the preparation and exposition of a group work.
Course unit contents: Agriculture and food systems: Brief history of agriculture; The global food system; Poverty and hunger; Localization of food systems. Understanding agricultural sustainability: Definitions; agricultural sustainability: goals, indicators. Improving sustainability of farming systems: management of soil, crop, vegetation biodiversity, water, nutrients, weeds, pest and disease control. New farming systems: Urban farming, Agroforestry, Organic farming. Pollution control in the agro-systems: wetlands, buffer strips, minor hydraulic network. Genetically modified organisms (new organisms/crops): Genetic engineering for stress tolerance; Mycorriza and biofertilizers. Processes and institutions. Case studies
