Syllabus
Prerequisites: The study of the history of medieval Arabic philosophy requires a basic knowledge of ancient and late ancient philosophy, especially Aristotle and Neoplatonism, and of medieval philosophy until the twelfth century. Knowledge of Arabic is not required.
Target skills and knowledge: The aims of the course are the following:
(1) the knowledge of the stages of development, the characteristics, the authors, the texts and the main doctrines of the Arabic philosophical tradition in medieval Islam (VIII-XII cent.);
(2) the analysys and the understanding of some texts of the Arabic philosophical tradition in Italian translation;
(3) the integral reading of the philosophical novel Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān by Ibn Ṭufayl (d. 1185).
Examination methods: The exam consists of an interview which lasts about 30 (thirty) minutes.
Assessment criteria: The mark will express the level of achievement of the aims. Completeness of knowledge, accuracy of conceptual analysis and correct terminology are considered necessary conditions for a high evaluation.
Course unit contents: The lessons will be divided according to the following teaching units::

32 hours
(1) The philosophy of Late Antiquity and the problem of the 'traslatio studiorum' in Medieval Islam
(2) The movement of translation during the 'Abbasid caliphate (IX-XI sec.).
(3) Al-Kindī's philosophy of (c. 800-870).
(4) The Baghdad Aristotelians (X sec.).
(5) Al-Fārābī's thought (c. 870-950).
(6) Avicenna (c. 980-1037).
(7) Al-Ġazālī (1058-1111).
(8) Al-Suhrawardī (1154-1191).
(9) The Andalusian tradition and Ibn Tufayl (1105-1185).
(10) Averroes (1126-1198).
(11) The transmission of Arabic philosophy from Muslim Spain to the Universities of the thirteenth century.

Reading of the philosophical novel Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān by Ibn Ṭufayl
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The predominant teaching method will be lectures. The lessons include the reading and the analysis of some significant pages by the above-mentioned authors. Attendance is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Further bibliographical references will be provided during the course. Non-attending students have to contact the professor to agree on the exam program.
