Experience.
Training in Geriatric Medicine with Prof. P.U. Carbonin (1978)at Catholic University in Rome. Training in both clinical and experimental Cardiology (Postgraduate school) with Prof. Visioli at the University of Parma (1979-80). Training in biochemistry and mitochondrial physiology under the guidance of Prof. Noris Siliprandi (1980-83). After the appointement as a CNR Researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Siliprandi Prof. Di Lisa investigated the biochemical alterations which are induced by myocardial ischemia in mitochondria. The NATO scholarship (1986-'87)at Michigan State University with Prof. Bieber was aimed at studying the relationship between CoA and carnitine. In the laboratory of Dr. R. Hansford (NIH, 1991-'92) Prof. Di Lisa developed new technologies to investigate the function of mitochondria at the single cell level in intact cardiomyocytes. Since 1992, along with the appointment as Associate Professor, Prof. Di Lisa has been leading an independent group focused on both the function of mitochondria in living cells under deenergizing conditions and the modifications of myocardial proteins induced by ischemia. In this respect he characterized the involvement of the permeability transition pore in myocardial ischemia by developing methods that are currently used in studies in isolated cells and intact hearts. Moving from the ischemia/reperfusion injury he is now focusing on the role of mitochondria in heart failure by characterizing processes involved in the mitochondrial formation of reactive oxygen species as causative factors of permeability transition and myofilament derangements.

Research areas
L'attività sperimentale del laboratorio è mirata alla caratterizzazione del ruolo dei mitocondri nella fisiopatologia del cuore e del muscolo scheletrico. In questo senso i principali campi di indagine possono essere riassunti come segue:
- L'alterazione dell'omeostasi mitocondriale del Ca2+ nel cuore ischemico.
- La transizione della permeabilità mitocondriale nel danno cardiaco indotto da ischemia e riperfusione.
- Formazione mitocondriale delle specie reattive dell'ossigeno (ROS) nella cardiopatia diabetica.
- Rilevanza delle monoammino ossidasi come sorgente di ROS nelle patologie del cuore e del muscolo scheletrico.
- Formazione mitocondriale di ROS nella distrofia muscolare come possibile bersaglio terapeutico
Gli studi vengono condotti su un ampio ventaglio di modelli sperimentali(mitocondri isolati, miociti in coltura, organi perfusi, esperimenti in vivo, campioni clinici)ultilizzando tecniche di biochimica, biologia molecolare e cellulare, alcune delle quali sviluppate originariamente nel nostro laboratorio
