Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course just requires mastery of English and, if possible, of some basic principles of microeconomics, macroeconomics and national accounting.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course, students will be able to find and analyze data and statistics concerning the globalization of production and the main human development indicators.
In addition, students should acquire the skills for a critical evaluation of the socio-economic impact of production globalization processes, with a focus on multinationals, foreign direct investments and offshoring strategies.
Examination methods: For attending students, the final exam is made of two parts. The first consists in a teamwork, with presentation and discussion in class (50% of final evaluation). The second will consit in a written test, based on closed and open questions (50% of final evaluation).

For non-attending students, the final exam will consist exclusively in the written test, with close and open questions, based on the material indicated in the References for non attending students.
Assessment criteria: The final evaluation will be mainly based on:

- students' active participation in classroom, their ability to fully understand, and critically analyze, the concepts and the literature presented in the classrooms or assigned at home;

- students' ability to prepare, and effectively present, the subjects assigned;

- the ability to write a short essay;

- students' ability to work in team.
Course unit contents: The course will primarily address the issue of the impact of production globalization on the socio-economic development of countries and territories. Emphasis will be placed on the economic role of multinational enterprises (MNE), foreign direct investments (FDI) and offshoring strategies, and at their influence on the level of human development across the world.

The course will touch the following topics:

1. Production globalization and human development: definitions, data sources, trends and stylized facts.

2. Review of the determinants and strategies of international transfer of production.

3. Review of the effects of FDI and MNEs on the economic deveopment of hosting territories.

4. Analysis of the social impacts determined by MNEs activities, with a focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR) aspects, human rights, labour standards and indigenous business promotion.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Points 1, 2 and 3 of the programme will be mainly developed through frontal lectures, with the use of PowerPoint slides. There is also the possibility to project videos in class.

Point 4, instead, will be also accomplished in a laboratory-like framework. On specific subjects, oral presentations, disputes between speakers for Vs against the motion, and teamwork will be considered.

Seminars and/or meeting with experts will be also provided.

During the course, students can test their learning advancement through a series of questions available on the Moodle platform.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Due to the large extent and complexity of the subject, no single basic textbook is indicated.
Lectures and the final exam will be based on the reading of scientific articles, working papers, reports and suggested books. All the material will be available online on Moodle or at the library of the "Marco Fanno" Department of Economics and Management.
