Syllabus
Prerequisites: An introductory-intermediate knowledge of the English language equal to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Target skills and knowledge: ENGLISH FOR PSYCHOLOGY
The present course aims at providing psychology students with the specific linguistic competences that are necessary to comprehend written and spoken English by using structures pertaining to psychological ESP (English for Specific Purposes). The course intends to prepare students to work in a group on a specific activities in the field of psychology while using English as the exclusive working and communicative language. For this reason, special attention will be paid to the lexical, syntactic, pragmatic and rhetorical aspects of psychology and academic English.
Examination methods: The final exam will be completed online at the University of Padua with a duration of 75 minutes. The structure is as follows; a) Use of English;b) Comprehension;c) Close passages; d)short summary ; e) analysis of a scientific articlel(unknown passage)
Except for Parts (d) & (e) the rest of the questions are multiple-choice types.

Assessment criteria: The exam is scored out of 100%. The passing grade is 60 and higher and ’Not pass’ for 59 and lower. Consideration will be given to student’s attendance and participation in class.
Course unit contents: The course is aimed at helping students develop their reading ,comprehension and speaking strategies
They will be given the necessary knowledge of grammar, syntax, vocabulary and discourse analysis.
The course will also focus on both the language of communication with explanations of words and grammatical structures typical of academic use, as well as reading and analysis of sectoral texts in English,with emphasis on morphosyntactic structures and complex study of the lexicon.
Each lesson will present one topic from the course book and the skills that are necessary to work with related texts, as well as exercises with the aim of consolidating the notions acquired during the lesson.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: All Lessons are carried out only in English and every week a new theme is introduced, aimed at enriching the students’ vocabulary, morphological skills and written and oral comprehension and production of specific texts pertaining to the psychological field. Psychology and academic English in written and spoken communication contexts will also be discussed. Students are encouraged to take an active role during lessons.
Students are strongly encouraged to partecipate in English activities proposed by Centro Linguistico di Ateneo.(CLA)Further material and instructions will be provided during the course on the psynet moodle platform
