Syllabus
Prerequisites: Suggested prerequisites: General and Inorganic Chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn the main properties of the organic molecules and of the biologically relevant macromolecules. At the end of the course he will be able to draw the chemical structure of complex organic molecules, to predict their reactivity and to relate their properties with the molecular structure.
Examination methods: Written exam (multiple choice questions, short answer questions, exercises)
Assessment criteria: Written exam, laboratory and study groups reports.
Course unit contents: 1 CFU - Introduction to organic chemistry. Covalent bond and the structure of molecules. The solubility of organic compounds. Nucleophiles and electrophiles.
2 CFU - Chemical reactions. Stereochemistry of organic compounds.
3 CFU - The functional groups (nomenclature - structure - reactivity-importance). Alkanes and cycloalkanes. Alkenes. Alkynes. Alkyl halides. Aromatic compounds.
4 CFU - Alcohols, phenols and ethers. Aldehydes and ketones. Carboxylic acids and derivatives (anhydrides, esters and amides). Amines.
5 CFU -The molecules of life. Carbohydrates. Lipids. Nucleic acids.
6 CFU - Amino acids and proteins. Enzymes.
7 CFU - The metabolic pathways: carbohydrate metabolism, citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
8 CFU - The metabolic pathways: lipid and amino acid metabolism.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, laboratory and classroom exercises, thematic groups on topics of organic chemistry and biochemistry related to the degree course.
