Syllabus
Prerequisites: There are no specific course requirements
Target skills and knowledge: Students acquire basic knowledge about living organisms, from the biochemical characteristics and the function of cells and their metabolism, to the evolution of different types of living organisms.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a written test (20 questions with multiple choice answers) and an oral test.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the level of understanding of the covered topics and on the level of acquisition of the knowledge.
Course unit contents: - Themes in the study of life. Fundamentals of chemistry in biology. The structure and function of large biological molecules
- General characteristics of cells. The cytoplasm. The nucleus and the endomembrane system. The semi-autonomous organelles.
- Membrane structure and transport. The extracellular matrix and cell-cell junctions.
- Cellular respiration and fermentation. Photosynthesis.
- Molecular structure of nucleic acids and DNA replication. Molecular mechanisms of DNA repair. DNA organization in chromosomes.
- Gene expression. From gene to protein: DNA transcription and translation. Regulation of gene expression. Biotechnologies
- Cell cycle. Mitosis and meiosis. The chromosomal basis of inheritance. The evolutionary history.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is delivered through lectures in the classroom in which use of slides and of video and multimedia material is made. Slides are then made available to students.
