Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Specific characteristics of the Module

Course unit contents: 1st credit: The biomolecules and their importance in animals. Traits of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells in relation to animals.
2nd credit: Sexual reproduction (meiosis and heredity laws) and its diversification in animals.
3rd credit: The peculiarities of the animal cell division and its control. Cytology with special attention to its distinctive features in different tissues: nervous, muscle, bone, blood, epithelium.
4th credit: Nutrition. Trophic specialization and food webs. Nutritional symbiosis. Gas exchanges: gills, lungs, tracheal systems. Hemoglobin and other oxygen-transport proteins. Nitrogen metabolism
5th credit: Movement and body structure. Nervous system. Sense organs. Main hormones and their regulation, feedback mechanisms.
6th credit: Animals of applied interest in agriculture and forestry. Protists, nematodes, molluscs, earhtworms, arthropods, vertebrates. Ecological importance and biodiversity. Classification.

Some lectures will be in English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will include 32 hours of teaching on the theoretical bases of animal biology.
The pratical activity (16 hours) will include 16 hours of laboratory work on the microscopic and macroscopic analyses of morphological and functional traits of animals relevant to agriculture.
Students will be divided in 3 groups and each group will receive the same amount of practical work.

Some practicals will be in English.
