Syllabus
Prerequisites: The knowledge of Arabic is not required.Attendance of the Arabic lab. Introduction to Classical Arabic (winter semester 2017-2018)is strongly recommended.
Target skills and knowledge: The aims are three:
1) the knowledge of the structure of the Arabic language (linguistic historical context of formation; phonology, morphology, transliteration systems).
2) the knowledge of the stages, the characteristics, the authors and the major texts of Classical Arabic literature (VI-XVII cent.).
3) the analysis and the understanding of some of the most significant pages of Classical Arabic literature in Italian translation.
Examination methods: The exam consists of an interview which lasts about 30 (thirty) minutes.
Assessment criteria: The mark will express the level of achievement of the aims. Completeness of knowledge, accuracy of analysis and correct terminology are considered necessary conditions for a high evaluation.
Course unit contents: The lessons will be divided according to the following teaching units:
(1) Elements of Islamistic: the Quranic Revelation, the prophet Muḥammad, the dogma of i'ğāz (6 hours)
(2) The Arabic language: linguistic historical context of its formation, phonology, morphology, transliteration system (16 hours)
(3) The Classical Arabic literature (readings of some important pages): pre-Islamic poetry; poetry and prose in the era of the Prophet Muḥammad; the Umayyad age and the origins of Adab; the movement of translation from the Greek into Arabic and Baghdad's cultural supremacy; decentralization of power and the court-poet al-Mutanabbi; the Seljuk era and al-Andalus: al-Ġazālī and Ibn Tufayl; the era of the Turks: the popular literature and the Arabian Nights (20 hours).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The predominant teaching method will be lectures. The lessons include the reading and the analysis of literary texts in Italian translation which will be prepared by the professor. Attendance is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Further bibliographical references will be provided during the course. Non-attending students have to contact the professor to agree on the exam program.
