Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of phonetic and phonological theories
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the following competences:
- basic notions of English and Italian phonetics and phonology
- basic knowledge of acoustic analysis
- knowledge of acoustic analysis software
Assessment criteria: The final grade will be based on a final test and a final experimental paper that the students can work on in groups
Course unit contents: The course explains the basic mechanisms for sound production and introduces students to speech acoustics and speech perception. The students will learn to read the speech acoustic signal and to use software for acoustic analysis. The course will focus on the differences between the Italian and English phonetic and phonological systems.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of 2 hours of lesson and 2 hours of practice in the lab weekly. The course strongly focuses on the acquisition of the theoretical and practical knowledge of speech acoustics and the ability to use speech analysis software, class attendance is highly recommended.
Students who will not be able to attend the class will have to contact the teacher before taking the exam. In any case, during the exam they will have to show the ability to read the speech acoustic signal and to use software for acoustic analysis.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The textbook will be integrated with other material given in class.
