- Understanding the stakes that make of industrial heritage a lever for territorial economic and cultural development;
- Learning to take into consideration and to use the evidence of economic activities for the re-creation of activities rooted in territorial traditions;
- Understanding how the territorial roots of industrial heritage may foster the surfacing of collective learning based on the co-production of new resources, driving force of sustainable development;
- Acquiring, through case analysis, the skills to analyse and to develop, monitor and manage the projects it generates and the subjects it engages in the framework of territorial development.
Examination methods: The quality of participation during the course and a final written report on a case study will be assessed.
Assessment criteria: Grading will be based on the work submitted and on attendance and active participation during the course.
Course unit contents: The seminar analyzes, in a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective, the role of industrial heritage in the evolution of urban contexts and in the economic and social transformations of territories, in a historical, cultural, economic, urban, symbolic and identitarian perspective.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Conceptualization; Methodology and tools; Analysis of case studies and of examples of best practice. The seminar will show that the most innovative forms of development combine the historical and cultural heritage with the most modern techniques and practices, and that, from this point of view, economy and culture, as well as public and private enterprise, instead of antagonizing each other, must proceed together, thus giving more meaning and persistence to projects.
Additional notes about suggested reading: "Working Heritage". Les dinosaures de l’archéologie industrielle (dvd).
