Syllabus
Prerequisites: Students should have basic knowledge of industry history and harbour some attractiveness towards the sources concerning business civilization. Moreover they should have some information about archival sciences.
Target skills and knowledge: Students should acquire a knowledge of business archives and work out the ability of carrying out preservation projects, description and improvement of enterprises’ archives with traditional and digital tools. Students should be able to use specific archival sources in order to carry out some researches over industrial heritage.
Examination methods: The examination consists in two short reports: on the first one the student should paint an overall picture of his native country's law system concerning : a) enterprises and entrepreneurs; b) protection and improvement of archival heritage; the second one is a project on business archives, that use the knowledge that acquired during the course.
Assessment criteria: On the first written report the more evaluated criteria will be the completeness of the researches; secondly the more evaluated criteria are : 1) originality ; 2) pertinence ; 3) the ability of evaluating situations and working out project proposals.
Course unit contents: The lessons are about:
1) business archives and archival sciences
2) typologies of companies and businessmen
3) typologies of records of companies
4) descriptive tools and finding aids of archival heritage on traditional backing and on Web
5) methodologies and strategies to preserve and increase the value of archival heritage of companies
6) practical applications and case studies
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The teacher will use slides in French language concerning ideas, debates, bibliography and photographs of the records to illustrate some methodologies and models. She will browse and comment with students some specific websites.
Moreover she will debate especially meaningful cases in order to extract methodologies and suggestions that students will be able to export to their home-countries.
Some visits are possible in business archives to carry out some practical applications.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The teacher will produce other suggestions which might emerge during the lessons and that might be useful to students to be taken with, when back to their home-countries.
