Syllabus
Prerequisites: General Physiology
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the fundamental principles of the structural and functional organization of the human nervous system. In-depth knowledge of i) mechanisms of intracellular and intercellular neuronal communication, ii) mechanisms of short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity involved in learning and memory and iii) functional organization of sensory systems
Examination methods: Written examination with open questions
Assessment criteria: Critical understanding of the subject matter
Course unit contents: FIRST PART (Prof Pietrobon)

1. Introduction. 2. Anatomical and functional organization of the human nervous system. 3. Electrophysiological and optical techniques for measurement of neuronal electrical activity. Optogenetics for selective stimulation of specific neurons. 4. Specific patterns of firing in different neurons and their mechanisms. 5. Techniques for measurement of synaptic transmission. Biophysical mechanisms of neurotransmitter release. 6. Mechanisms of short- and long-term synaptic plasticity. Learning and memory. 7. General functional organization of sensory systems; study in depth of one sensory system.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: When possible lectures will be given in an interactive way to stimulate the critical participation of the students and test their understanding of the topics.
