Brief description of the degree course
Characteristics and objectives
The Master (BSc) course in Materials Science forms graduates with a high-level competencies in the field of research and development of innovative functional materials. This is a strategic area of industrial innovation, which requires a specific interdisciplinary preparation with a knowledge of the most recent developments in the scientific research. The MSc courses initially deal with the application of the chemical and physical concepts to the investigation of the materials properties. Then, they will focus on more specialized topics of materials science and technology. In particular, dedicated courses will address the following topics: (i) functional organic and polymeric materials, (ii) basics and technologies of microelectronic materials, particularly semiconductors, (iii) structure and properties of surfaces, (iv) nanostructured materials and nanotechnologies, with particular emphasis on the correlation between microscopic and macroscopic properties, (v) materials technologies. Two dedicated laboratory courses will make the students more familiar with the most advanced chemical and physical techniques for the preparation and characterization of materials. Finally, optional courses will be given to acquire advanced competencies in highly specialized fields. The MSc course is concluded by the final exam, which allows the MSc student to carry out an original experimental or theoretical activity at the University, research institutions or companies.

Occupational opportunities
An MSc graduate in Materials Science acquires a preparation suitable to carry out a research and development activity in high-tech companies or to continue the studies in the doctoral school in Science and Engineering of Materials and Nanostructures or in similar doctoral schools. In particular, the preparation is aimed at performing basic and applied research in the field of microelectronics, telecommunications, advanced molecular materials (polymeric or not) and at supporting the activities of small and medium companies requiring continue product innovation through the use of innovative materials. In particular, the MSc educational program provides competencies to carry out research and development of state-of-the-art products based on nanomaterials.
