Syllabus
Prerequisites: Organic chemistry 1-3, in particular ionic reactions leading to the formation of the C-C bond.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is devided in two parts and is aimed to provide the students the instruments to apply organic chemistry to the synthesis of organic molecules even those of some complexity. In the second part new reaction leading to the formation of C-C bonds via metal catalysis will be studied. They will allow to further improve the synthetic tools.
Examination methods: Two written tests: in the firs one the student has to provide the retrosynthesis and synthesis of three organic molecules while the secon one includes theory as well as retrosynthesis and synthesis based on it.
Assessment criteria: Tests scores
Course unit contents: 1. Design of an organic synthesis; retrosynthetic analysis; transformation of the functional groups. Routes of disconnection of the organic molecules (disconnection of one and two functional groups), synthetic equivalents (synthons) retrosynthetic analysis according to the molecular target, protecting groups.
2. Transformation of functional groups by means of catalytic processes. Formation of metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond. Catalytic oxidation processes. Stereoselective catalytic processes. Applications to advanced organic synthesis (Part II).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Class practice with given examples. Discussion of home work
Additional notes about suggested reading: Handouts and lecture notes, because there is no single text that includes the variety of topics covered.
