Syllabus
Course unit contents: Telemedicine is a field of telecommunications devoted to the acquisition, transmission and processing of biological data remotely collected from patients.

Body Area Network is the network made by an infrastructure of sensors placed on the human body to allow for pervasive and comprehensive monitoring of several physiological body responses, i.e., heart rate, blood pressure.

Telemedicine and body area network can be used to create an effective system for monitoring and/or intervening on particular class of at-risk patients.

The course gives the fundamental principles of telemedicine and body area network, with particular reference to three different scenarios: emergency, acute and chronic situations. The most common applications and communications protocols are presented, together with some successful and promising examples of telemedicine systems and body area networks. The critical aspects of the current telemedicine technology are also presented.

1) Telemedicine scenarios: emergency, acute, chronic;
2) Monitoring and intervention with telemedicine;
3) Signals and sensors in telemedicine and in body area network;
4) Signals acquisition: body area networks; applications and communications protocols;
5) Signals processing in telemedicine and body area networks;
6) Open-loop versus closed-loop applications;
7) Successful and promising telemedicine and body area network applications.
