Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides advanced knowledge, both theoretical and experimental, about the characteristics and the principles of optical fiber systems and the relative devices. The student will also have the opportunity to perform several experimental activity in the lab.
Examination methods: Oral exam and laboratory reports.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on his/her comprehension of the course topics and on his/her ability to elaborate them. The final grade will be based also on the laboratory reports.
Course unit contents: The course is focused on the physical layer of optical fibers telecommunication systems. The most important devices and measurement techniques used in optical fiber systems will be studied in details. The student will also have the opportunity to perform 8 laboratory experiments. The main topics of the course are the following:
- optical fibers: coupled mode theory, nonlinear effect in propagation;
- instruments: optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) and optical spectrum analyzer (OSA);
- passive devices: couplers, isolators, circulators, filters, etc.
- active devices: optical amplifiers (EDFA, SOA, Raman), diode lasers (DFB, DBG, VCSEL), photodiodes (PIN, APD), modulators (acousto-optic, electro-optic, absorption);
- transmission systems: receiver noise, sensitivity, power budget, coherent modulation formats.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is organized in lectures, supported by laboratory activity. Lectures will focus on the principles and techniques at the base of optical fiber networks. Laboratory activity offers the opportunity to deepen the understanding.
