Syllabus
Prerequisites: Any introductory course on digital communications covering the basic concepts of digital transmission, and MAP and ML decision criteria (e.g., the ”Telecomunicazioni” course at the ”Laurea in Ingegneria dell’Informazione”).
Target skills and knowledge: Students will learn the basics of coding theory for error free transmission, covering more recent advances such as turbo codes and LDPCs. An overview of the limits of error free transmission will also be given by introducing Shannon's theorem on channel coding, and its application to multiple carriers (OFDM) and multiple antennas (MIMO) systems.
Examination methods: Homeworks + Oral exam on theoretical aspects + (optional) Oral presentation of a project.
Assessment criteria: The final grade will be determined by the homeworks (50%) and the oral exam (50%). A further 10% increase will be granted for the project.
Course unit contents: - Hard versus soft decoding of block codes
- Introduction to linear codes
- Comparing codes performance via bit error rate and spectral efficiency
- Codes on graphs: convolutional, turbo, LDPC, repeat-accumulate, BICM, and trellis codes
- Decoding via message passing algorithms
- Shannon’s capacity theorem: proof of direct and converse theorems
- Capacity for Gaussian, waveform, and parallel channels
- Capacity and coding for MIMO and multiple-antenna systems
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Blackboard + slides will be used.
