Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to provide the student with basic knowledge about propagation of electromagnetic fields in metallic wave-guides and, mostly, in optical fibers. The student will also have the opportunity to participate to lab activities, both experimental and numerical.
Examination methods: Written exam and laboratory reports. Oral exam is optional.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on his/her comprehension of the course topics and on his/her ability to elaborate them. The final grade will be based also on the laboratory reports.
Course unit contents: The course is focused on the physical layer of wired telecommunication systems, with special emphasis to fiber optics. Electromagnetic propagation in transmission lines, metallic waveguides and optical fibers will be studied. The student will also perform 5 laboratory experiments. The main topics of the course are the following:
- principles of electromagnetism (Maxwell's and Helmoltz's equation, Poynting vector, polarization);
- transmission lines (characteristic impedance, voltage and current waves);
- metallic waveguides (modal description, dispersion, losses);
- optical fibers (description by ray model, description by modes, attenuation, modal and chromatic dispersion, PMD).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The students is expected to attend lectures and laboratory activities.
