Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of physics and chemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: A student who has fulfilled the objectives of the course will be able to:
• determine the position of the geological objects on a map and in the field
• be able to analyse the geological characteristics in different types of maps and decide which type of geophysical survey can be useful
• recognize the structural lineaments, rocks, sediments in the field
• understand and be able to criticize geological works
Examination methods: 1 written test and a final oral examination
The test will be 60 minutes long.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria will be based on the acquired ability of:
_ analysing topographic maps, defining geographic and UTM coordinates, drawing a topographic profile
_ reading, interpreting geological maps and drawing geological sections
_collecting and reworking structural data using stereographic projections
_ collecting and interpreting geomechanical data
_ collecting and analysing geophysical data
_ recognizing geological hazard situations
Course unit contents: Elements of cartography. Geographic, UTM and Gauss Boaga coordinates, topographic maps, stratimetry analysis, geological profiles. Properties of the rocks and sediments. Review of stratigraphy, rock and sediment classification. Elements of structural geology and geomorphology, erosion process and sediment production, geomorphological implications. Geological maps of the Veneto, Garda area, Padova, Trentino, Euganean hills, Apennines, Italy. Elements of geothermics. Seismic refraction and reflection survey. Electrical survey, resistivity profiles. Stress and strain, rock reology, fault mechanics, elements of seismotectonic and seismic hazard. Elements of geodynamics, mantle and core physics, geothermal setting and gravity.
Field laboratories : Structural and geomechanical measures: Euganean hills. Geophysics (geoelectrical and seismical survey): Fenice Parc. Radon measures: Euganean hills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is based on theory presentation followed by applications.
The practical work consists in analysis of topographic, geomorphological and geological maps, construction of geological sections, field laboratory for collecting structural data and plotting them geomechanics,geophysical survey in the field near Padova, specific seminars by expert researchers.
