Syllabus
Prerequisites: PLEASE NOTE: this course (9 credits) is offered to students of the Master Course in Environmental Engineering. Students belonging to the Bachelor Course in Ingegneria Chimica e dei Materiali can attend the same course for 6 credits only (corso mutuato). At the beginning of the course these students will be informed about the topics to fulfill the 6 credits.

All students attending this course are required to know about fluid transport (pumps, fans, compressors), heat transfer (heat exchangers), applied thermodynamics of one-component systems, chemical kinetics.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge about how pollution is generated by human activities and industrial processes.
Learning the methodology for matehmatical modelling and simulation of chemical and biological reactors.
Acquiring know-how for the design, rating and operability of wastewater treatment processes and plants.
Examination methods: Written examination, including both numerical exercises and theory.

Besides that, for Environmental Engineering students only, an assignment concerning the operation ad an existing plant, will be given, to be performed within 3-4 student groups and to be discussed prior to access to the written examination.
Assessment criteria: Student evaluation will be based on:
1. understanding of concepts and methods for the analysis and simulation of reactors used in wastewater treatment
2. ability of making calculations about the design and rating of main wastewater treatment processes (both biological and physico-chemical)
3. discussion about the assignment concerning the operation ad an existing plant
Course unit contents: Water consumption, pollution sources and wastewater treatment in both urban and industrial sites.
Chemical and biological reactor engineering.
Process reactors with respect to water purification.
Biological, physical and physico-chemical wastewater treatments. Sludge treatment technologies.
Sizing and rating of biological treatment processes and plants.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 1. theoretical lectures
2. applied lectures, with calculation and design of wastewater treatment processes and plants
3. visit to wastewater treatment facilities

Students are strongly recommended to attend class.
