Prerequisites:
|
none |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
The course aims to provide the thermodynamic basis for the understanding of the processes of ironmaking and steelmaking. It also seeks to explain the steel production processes from the two main raw materials: ores and scrap. Finally, it aims to train the student in the evaluation of the influence of operating parameters on the process in order to give him the preliminary concept on the design of a production cycle, which also includes the secondary metallurgy processes. |
Examination methods:
|
Oral examination |
Assessment criteria:
|
The assessment will be based on the student's topics comprehension, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed during the lessons and the ability to apply them autonomously. |
Course unit contents:
|
Raw material for iron and steel production: an overwiev on iron ore extraction and enrichment processes; coals, limestone.
Process physicochemical fundamentals
Physicochemicals of blast furnace process: the reduction of iron ores.
Overview of Blast Furnace Process
Balances of Blast Furnace.
Physicochemicals of oxygen steelmaking process.
Overview of oxygen steelmaking process.รน
Balances of BOF converter
Electric Steelmaking: the Electric Arc Furnace
Secondary steelmaking
Vacuum processes
High alloyed steelmaking: Stainless steel production, AOD process
Continuous Casting: overview and controls of microstructure
Remelting processes
Foundry: Overview and processes for molding |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
The lectures supported by slides in PPT allow the student to have a complete overview of the topics covered. There will also be tours on industrial plants to analyze the processes developed in the classroom. |
Additional notes about suggested reading:
|
The slides of the lectures are sufficient to have an adequate preparation for the examination. Depth analysis of the topics covered can be found in the texts recommended. |
