Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire basic knowledge on the mechanisms underlying cell adaptation, damage, and death. General principles of immunity, inflammation and nutrition-related diseases will also be presented.
In addition, the student will acquire knowledge on the advanced biomolecular tools available for disease control and diagnosis
Examination methods: Oral and/or written examination
Assessment criteria: Knowledge and ability to present and synthesize course topics.
Course unit contents: Mechanisms of cell adaptation, damage, and death. Acute and chronic inflammation. Natural and acquired immunity. Auto-immune diseases. Nutrition-related diseases.
Biotechnology applied to diagnosis and control of food-borne transmissible diseases. Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic analysis applied to diseases surveillance and control. Genetic basis of disease, including variants within pathogens that influence infection, transmission, and prevention.
Ecological and molecular basis of the host-parasite relationships.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, group work, individual work and presentations by students on specific subjects assigned by the teacher.
