Syllabus
Prerequisites: Forest ecology, Botany
Target skills and knowledge: Students will learn how to apply basic silvicultural practices to forest stands. Pure and mixed forest comprise the main European tree species will be analysed. Students will acquire knowledge on the application of forest ecology principles, and will gain the skill to manage forest stand. Students will be able to predict the effects of various silvicultural treatments on stand development; and relate silvicultural practice to specific management objectives.
Examination methods: Oral exam
Assessment criteria: The final grade will be based upon performance on the Final Exam and on the active participation in class discussions. Attendance is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged.
Course unit contents: Introduction to Silviculture and Stand dynamics. Silvicultural systems in even-aged and uneven-aged stands. Applied silviculture on main European species. Forest management in mountain and mediterranean forests.
