Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: Aim: understanding of the geological processes which form and shape the mountain areas. By the end of the course, students will be able to better interpret the environment in the mountain areas, in particular the main geological structures, the nature of the bed rock and type of superficial deposits.
Examination methods: The examination consists in a oral discussion
Assessment criteria: Open questions on the topics treated during the course.
The following criteria will be considered:
- terminological pertinence to describe the topics discussed;
- the learning and ability to read and interpret a geological map.
Course unit contents: - Plate tectonics
- Types of rocks: sedimentary rocks, magmatic rocks, metamorphic rocks
- Rock deformation and geological structures: folds, faults and joints
- The formation of mountains: orogenic styles
- The geology of Alps
- Erosion, mass wasting processes, weathering,glacial geomorphology,
- Geological maps and geological sections
- Field excursion
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lectures, exercises on interpreting a geological maps and drawing a geological section, and field excursion.
