Prerequisites: The student should have some basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of ruminants and in-depth information on the principles of cattle nutrition and feeding.
Target skills and knowledge: The student acquires in-depth knowledge on modern farming systems of dairy and beef cattle. Different dairy and beef farming systems of milk and beef will be analyzed assessing their impact on yield and food quality, animal welfare as well as on farm economics and environmental sustainability.
Examination methods: At the end of the teaching semester, there will be a written final exam made of a multiple choice test. In the following sessions of the Academic calendar, the exam is oral and it will consist of at least of 3 main questions on the topics covered by the course with the following insights.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will take into account the student's understanding of the topics covered by the lectures as well as his ability to apply these knowledge in an autonomous and professional manner.
Course unit contents: The course has the following framework with the relative credits (ECTS)
- Analysis of the domestic dairy sector, strengths and weaknesses. Intensive and extensive dairy farming systems (1 ECTS).
- Management of reproduction in cattle. Modern reproduction schemes in dairy farms. Fertility parameters and fertility problems in dairy cattle (1 ECTS).
- Management calendar of the dairy cow. Calving and early care of the calf, lactation curve, dry and transition period. Milking procedure and prevention of mastitis (1 ECTS).
- Principles of dairy cattle welfare and main risk factors related to farm housing and herd management (1 ECTS).
- Weaning and rearing of breeding heifers (1 ECTS).
- Beef and veal calf production in Italy, strengths and weaknesses of the domestic sector (1 ECTS).
- Principles of veal calf production - farming systems, feeding programs and animal welfare (1 ECTS).
- Beef cattle production - farming systems, feeding program and animal welfare (1 ECTS).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is made of a series of lectures and educational seminars supported by specific practical trainings carried out at the dairy facility of the Experimental Farm of the University of Padova and by technical visits to commercial veal and beef cattle farms.
