Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Viticulture is requested for fully understanding of lectures in Agricultural Entomology.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge on the anatomy, biology, ecology and behaviour of arthropod pests and their natural enemies will be provided. Emphasis will be given on biological control and biotechnologies useful to monitor and control grapevine pests. Concepts and applications of Integrated Pest Management will be reported.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a written test containing open questions. The questions cover the entire program. The written test can be integrated with an interview when necessary.
Assessment criteria: The student competence will be evaluated considering the notions and concepts acquired and the ability to use them for solving problems.
Course unit contents: 1st credit: Principles of morphology, physiology and ethology of insects.
2nd credit: Reproduction and development, life cycles, population dynamics, factors affecting insect outbreaks. Relationships between insects and other organisms, transmission of pathogens.
3rd credit: Biological control, supervised control, biotechnologies, Integrated Pest Management.
4th credit: Insect pest management, nature and features of pesticides, impact of pesticides on non-target organisms, resistance to pesticides.
5th credit: Grape pests.
6th credit: Insect classification.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course comprises theoretical lessons (about 40 hours) as well as laboratory and field activities (about 8 hours).
Additional notes about suggested reading: The study material is the copy of the slides used during the lessons, which will be provided online: https://elearning.unipd.it/scuolaamv/ (Moodle). The use of a reference book is recommended (see below).
