Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: - Iconographical and iconological methodology and its crucial role in the study of art history.
- To gain knowledge of the most common texts and the most popular literary sources used by artists in the Medieval and Renaissance ages.
- To recognize and identify the possible links with the iconographical tradition and symbolism in the works of art.
- A practical approach with "Iconclass", earlier texts and earlier dictionaries, such as Louis Réau. Iconographie de l'art chrétien, 3 voll, Paris, 1955-1958, or George Kaftal. Iconography of the saints in Italian painting, 4 voll. [Tuscan, North East and North West, South Italy]
Examination methods: Oral, written or practical test.
Assessment criteria: 40% - Understanding of subjects and themes
20% - Clarity of exposition and reorganization of the texts
20% - Capacity of critical judgment
20% - Understanding complexity of issues and themes proposed.
Course unit contents: A) The iconological/iconographical methods and their function in art history research. Terminology and developments.
B) On libraries decoration in the modern age.
C) A choice of readings about religious and secular themes to acquire an appropriate knowledge of methodological references.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures.
Presentations given by students. Exercises using "Iconclass".
It is believed that a proper balance between traditional teaching and seminar activity allows to successfully achieve the learning objectives.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The attendance of the class is highly recommended.
More bibliography will be suggested during the lectures.
The texts that are unavailable in the English language can be replaced with other readings agreed with the professor.
