Syllabus
Prerequisites: Necessary knowledge for learning Course contents: fundamental constructs of Dynamic Psychology and Developmental Psychology, theories and instruments for psychological assessment in infancy and adolescence, some aspects of research methodologies and data analysis in clinical and evolutional fields.
Target skills and knowledge: This course intends to provide students knowledge about actual theoretical models in Developmental Psychopathology and about diagnostic classification systems of psychic pathologies in infancy and adolescence. Moreover, it will provide also a specific description of principal symptomatologic manifestations of psychopathologic frames, with clinical examples, in order to foster not only a theoretical comprehension of modalities and characteristics through which psychic impairment expresses itself, above all, during the first years of age.
Finally, it will be promoted the acquisition of competencies related to therapeutic and supportive modalities of interventions with children and families, with the aim to facilitate student in having an exhaustive and critical view on diagnostic models and on clinical practicality in this field.
Wherever possible, research models and methods used in psychopathology will be presented, with the purpose of explaining the integration between these two aspects of the study and practice, relatively to clinical themes.
Examination methods: The exam is written, with the chance to integrate it with an oral session
It is composed by 6 open questions, but specific, which the student will be asked to answer to, referring to what it has been taken in consideration during lessons and by books.
Questions are so organized:
- 4 questions regarding themes considered during the course, for which a wide answer is requested;
- 2 questions related to specific definitions of the key points and constructs of the discipline, for which a synthetic answer in requested
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of student’s performance will be done due to the following criteria:
- ability to answer to all the questions formulated;
-adequacy and adherence of the answers to the questions ( Is the answer in line with the theme subject of examination? Is it vague or not well specified?)
- completeness and exhaustiveness of the given answers (Does it contain all the constitutive elements of the argument/construct subject of the question?)
- appropriateness of the language (the answer is formulated with an adequate language which refers to specific psychological terms to describe the construct and/or the theme requested?)
-ability in synthesizing
Course unit contents: Specific contents of the course will be subdivided in the following thematic areas:
FIRST AREA: Fundaments
-Theoretical and methodological fundaments of developmental psychopathology;
- Methods abd research instruments: clinical assessment and research procedures;
- Classification Systems of psychopathology (classification 0-3, DSM System, Classification ICD-10): fundaments, definitions and diagnostic criteria;
-the diagnostic process with child and family
SECOND AREA: Clinical pathologies in the life cycle
- Attachment Disorders
- Growth Disorders;
- Behavioural and Attentional Disorders;
- Autistic Spectrum Disorders;
- Affective and Anxiety Disorders;
- Trauma and its impact on the development;
- Eating and substance dependence Disorders
THIRD AREA: Treatment
- Models and Perspectives for taking on the responsibility of child and adolescent
- The clinical work with family;
- Net-work with schools and child and adolescent’s life contexts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be organized due to the following teaching methodologies:
- frontal lessons with the teacher;
-presentation of exemplificative clinical cases using video material and/or interviews that students will be allowed to view;
-oral discussion with students about themes debated during the course;
- students’ presentations on themes debated during the course and/or in-depth analyses related to them, with a following discussion with the teacher and the other students;
-researches and external clinician’s interventions on specific themes of the course and open discussion with the teacher and the other students.
it will be enhanced and advocated critical discussion and the possibility for students to express their own doubts, difficulties and/or requesting more deeply explanations, in order to produce the best possible learning, as well as an approach the most possible “professionalizing” on the themes considered.
