Syllabus
Prerequisites: The preliminary requirements for the course are those to have access to the master in Product Innovation Engineering.
Knowledge provided by the courses Machine design and Mechanics of materials is required as a starting base.
Target skills and knowledge: The course Design with composite materials aims to provide the following expertise:
• knowledge of the structural properties of polymeric composite materials
• knowledge of the advantages and limitation in using polymeric composite materials for structural components
• knowledge of the methodologies for stress analysis and design (under static loading) of composite structural components
• knowledge of the methodologies for experimental characterisation of mechanical properties of polymeric composite materials
• knowledge of the methodologies the numerical modelling of structural components in composite materials
The skills provided by the course are expected to be the following:
• ability to use polymeric composite materials as alternative materials with respect to conventional ones in the development of innovative, high performance structural components.
• ability to design structural components made of polymeric composite materials under static loading conditions
• ability to optimize the structural response of structural components made of polymeric composite materials under static loading conditions
Examination methods: The exam, in written form, consists in 5-6 open questions on the subjects illustrated during the course. For the higher marks there is the possibility of an oral integration for a deeper discussion on the questions answered in written form.
Assessment criteria: The criteria for the assessment of the exam are the following:
• the knowledge and the understanding of the methodologies for stress analysis and design (under static loading) of composite structural components
• the capability of judgment on the opportunity and convenience of using polymeric composite materials as alternative materials in the design of structural components
Course unit contents: General characteristics of polymer composites, outline of the main production processes and comparison with other structural materials. Theory of elasticity for anisotropic bodies. Micromechanical analysis, elastic properties and strength of unidirectional lamina. Classical lamination theory. Criteria of static failure. Resistance and stiffness oriented design of composite structures. Notch and edge effects in composite structure. Thermal stresses. Sandwich Structures. Experimental characterization of composite laminates and NDT. Strategies for numerical analysis of composite structures. Examples of applications.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course aims to provide the knowledge and the skills for the design of structural components made of polymeric composite materials subjected to static loading conditions and for the optimization of their structural response
In terms of teaching methodology, beside the analysis and illustration of the theory related to the course subject, suitable exercises to clarify the theory are given, even on real cases. Dedicated session in the experimental laboratory are planned on the mechanical characterisation as well as on the manufacturing on simple geometry components. When possible, industry representatives are invited to give seminars and visit to industrial plants are organised
Additional notes about suggested reading: The students can make reference to the textbook and the notes of the course, as well as to support material and the scientific papers made available during the classes

the following books are suggested for integration
D.Hull, An Introduction to Composite Materials, Cambridge University Press
B.D. Agarwal, L.J. Broutman, Analysis and performance of fibre composites – Wiley
P. K.Mallick , Fiber-reinforced composites : materials, manufacturing, and design -M. Dekker
