Syllabus
Prerequisites: In order to take any of the components of the exam of English 3 it is necessary to have completed and registered the exam of English 2.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to bring students to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Moreover, students will be expected to acquire knowledege of the fundamentals of English Linguistics and the relationship between language, culture and society.
Examination methods: 1. Academic Writing / Language, Culture and Society: final exam or continuous assessment (for attenders) of academic writing
2. Oral Skills: final exam or continuous assessment (for attenders) of oral production and interaction
Assessment criteria: Criteria based on the descriptors of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Course unit contents: The course is made up of 2 parts:
1. Academic Writing / Language, Culture and Society (Dalziel - 1 semester)
2. Oral Skills
(Collaboratore ed Esperto Lingusitico - 1 & 2 semesters)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 1. Academic Writing / Language, Culture and Society (Dalziel - 2 semester)
Consolidation and development of writing skills with reference to the following descriptor from the European Language Portfolio (CercleS version).
C1 – Written production: "I can write clear, well-structured texts on complex subjects in my field, underlining the relevant salient issues, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples, and rounding them off with an appropriate conclusion."
The topics for the academic writing tasks will regard: language and culture; bilingualism and plurilingualism; language learning strategies; "Englishes" and English-Medium Instruction; language and identity.

2. Oral Skills (Collaboratore ed Esperto Linguistico - 1 & 2 semesters)
Development of the skills of oral production and interaction with reference to the following descriptors from the European Language Portfolio (CercleS version).
C1 – Oral production: "I can give a clear, well-structured presentation on a complex subject in my field, expanding and supporting points of view with appropriate reasons and examples."
C1 – Oral interaction: "I can argue a formal position convincingly, responding to questions and comments and answering complex lines of counter argument fluently, spontaneously and appropriately."

Discussion of a film. During the year students will look at vocabulary for film genres, film criticism and recounting the plot of a film.
