Syllabus
Prerequisites: None.
Target skills and knowledge: The first aim of the course is to study the relation between geography and history, between territory and events, between environment and human communities. We will move from the theories of the past to the most recent ones.
The second aim is to analyse territoriality, through specific historical-geographical territorial examples.
A third aim is to propose an historical-geographical interpretation of the Mediterranean region, a key-area for the western civilisation, by means mainly (but not only) Braudel’s approach.
Examination methods: Oral (closed book) or written examination.
Assessment criteria: Assessment of knowledge and assesment of linking concepts capacity
Course unit contents: First term, 6 cfu, 42 hours

Time and space

1- Man-environment relations by determinist to possibilist theories;
2- Multitime and multiscale in historical geography;
3- Territoriality: power, land and boundaries

Second term, 3 cfu, 21 hours

The Mediterranean region by Braudel: an integration between geography and history.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Study of class notes and required books.

Methodology: lectures, discussions with the teacher.
