Syllabus
Prerequisites: Materials Science, Chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: The course aim at providing knowledge and competence on:

- polymers and elastomers synthesis methods
- structural properties of polymers and elastomers
- polymers, elastomers an polymeric fibers properties with particular reference to mechanical properties
- different types of polymers and elastomers and their applications
- characteristics and processing of polymer nanocomposites
Examination methods: Written evaluation
Assessment criteria: Acquisition of basic concepts and ability to apply them.
Course unit contents: Definition of Plastics and Polymers – History of Plastics - Plastics Industry

How polymers are made: Step and Chain Reaction Polymerisations.
Excercises.
Vinyl and non vinyl polymerization;
Ring opening polymerization.
Industrial methods of polymerization.
Polymers molecular weights. Excercises.
POLYMERS STRUCTURES: macromolecular structures, conformations, configurations, bonds and interactions, molecular weights and entanglements.
POLYMERS MORPHOLOGIES: amorphous polymers, glass transition, free volume, semi-cristalline polymers, elastomers structures, Polymers solutions, blend and alloys and IPN.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMERS: stress-strain curves, linear visco-elasticity, Boltzmann superposition principle, Dynamic mechanical properties, Time-temperature correspondence, Deformation of Elastomers, Fibers mechanical properties, fracture in polymers. Excercises.
POLYMERIC MATERIALS: Commodity plastics, Engineering plastics, High performance, Thermosets, Elastomers
COMPOSITES: matrices and polymeric fibers.
NANO COMPOSITES
Lab experiments: chemical synthesis, FTIR analysis, Mechanical tests.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and experimental laboratory.
