Prerequisites: Elements of chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: Students are expected to understand, from the relationship between structure and function, the main characteristics and properties of materials (biological tissues, metals, polymers, ceramics and composites) commonly used in biomedical applications, with specific reference to those used for the construction of prosthetic devices.
Examination methods: 2 written examinations in progress, oral examination in the official sessions.
Assessment criteria: Students' preparation will be assessed on the basis of their ability to critically discuss the topics covered during the course.
Course unit contents: Biomaterials: definitions and applications. Classification of biomaterials: traditional materials and biological tissues. Solid state: the chemical bond and crystalline structure. Cell components. Fundamentals of cell morphology and biology to define the structure and composition of biological materials. Biocompatibility. Polymeric biomaterials, metals, ceramics and composites. Medical applications of biomaterials and related issues: characteristics and properties of biomaterials. Biomaterials applications: vascular prostheses, prosthetic heart valves, prosthetic joints.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The program will be conducted through traditional lectures and seminars.
The learning objectives will be achieved through the in class presentation and discussion of the topics covered by the program.
