Syllabus
Prerequisites: The knowledge and skills required to follow the course successfully are those inherent in the anatomy of livestock and animal husbandry.
Target skills and knowledge: Aim of the course is to give to the student the essential elements to make an integral (morphological, physiological and functional) evaluation of growing animals. The student will be act to characterize animals according to race and aptitude type and to select the animal proper to specific needs. Student will be act to evaluate and classify the carcass of cattle in accordance with the SEUROP-classification system. Student will be act to recognize the principal meat-cuts of cattle.
Examination methods: The exam will take place with an oral interview. Only on request written exam with open questions will be considered.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on basis of the acquired knowledge in the different parts of the course. The student must demonstrate a general knowledge of the course contents. Particularly, students should demonstrate a good knowledge on the most important body regions, their anatomical basis, the elements of their evaluation, their strengths and weaknesses, possible defects.
Knowledge of morphological linear evaluation and carcass evaluation are requested.
Course unit contents: Exterior conformation: Anatomical terminology. Locomotor apparatus: general part. Osteology, artrology and myology.
Coats – Coat color genetics – Horses coats – Distinctive markings of head ant limbs – Bovine coats.
Animals identification – Age-estimate by means of teeth examination. Structures of teeth and set of teeth. Dental chronology and age-estimate by means of teeth examination in horses and cattle.
Parts and regions of animal body: head, neck, anterior, dorsal, ventral and lateral regions of the trunk, regions of the limbs
Functional types: dynamic type, dairy type, meat type, double aptitude type. Animal mechanics (Static and dynamic animal mechanics)
Linear evaluation protocol for milk cows – Exercitations with experts for linear description and classification of Brown Swiss and Holstein Friesian breed
Evaluation and classification of bovine carcasses
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching activities comprise lectures with exercises at the museum on the musculoskeletal system, exercises in classroom on the estimates of animal age on the basis of teeth examination in horse and cattle. Educational visits at dairy farms and beef units, direct exercise on linear morphological evaluation of animals in order to give practical content to the course and give sufficient skills to students for making choices on appropriate animals depending from the different production aims.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Students are highly recommended to be present at lectures throughout the course, especially for exercises and practical activities, also in order to acquire the learning material presented during class activities. This material will be made available online as power point presentations. Lecture notes and other material will be directly provided as photocopies.
