Syllabus
Prerequisites: No specific pass of these exams are required.
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides students with basic knowledge on the livestock production system, breeds of livestock and animal product. The theory of quantitative genetics and its application in the field of animal breeding will be provided in the second part of the course.
Examination methods: The examination of students will be carried out through written test accounting for multiple choice questions, exercises and questions to be answered with a brief text production.
Assessment criteria: Students’ knowledge will be evaluated considering both specific definitions given during the course but also by analyzing their capacity of applying the acquired knowledge to animal breeding and genetics.
Course unit contents: Livestock production systems. Aims of livestock production. Meat, milk and dairy products. Dairy cattle production systems. Beef cattle production systems. Pig production. Dry-cured ham production. Pig production systems.
Breeds of livestock. Dairy cattle breeds. Beef cattle breeds. Dual-purpose cattle breeds. Pig breeds.
Animal breeding. Aims and features of breeding programs. Qualitative and quantitative traits. Genetic effects and variation of quantitative traits. Breeding value. Heritability and repeatability of quantitative traits. Basics of breeding value estimation. Accuracy of estimated breeding values. Additive genetic relationships. The tabular method. Inbreeding and inbreeding depression. Prediction of breeding values. Case studies on the use of predicted breeding values and development of mating plans. Response to selection. Pathways of selection. Correlated selection response and indirect selection. Multiple-trait selection. Gene-assisted , marker-assisted and genomic selection. Crossbreeding and production of commercial crossbred animals. Breeding against hereditary diseases in the purebred dog. Genetic
disorders and recessive defects in horses.
Practicals. Breeds of livestock detection. Computer lab on the application of the tabular method for computation of additive genetic relationships and inbreeding. Computer lab on the prediction of breeding values. Use of predicted breeding values and development of mating plans.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Direct room teaching activity and exercises on genetic improvement of animals: breeds of livestock detection; computer lab on the application of the tabular method for computation of additive genetic relationships and inbreeding; computer lab on the prediction of breeding values; use of predicted breeding values and development of mating plans.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The presence of students during direct teaching activities and exercises are strictly recommended in order to acquire the material presented during lectures and exercises. The lecturer will allow the students to access the material through appropriate on line instruments.
