Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics on hydrology and hydraulics
Target skills and knowledge: The goal of the course is to provide a wide knowledge on the watershed management and to make students skilful in planning and designing actions against erosive flood events and land instabilities. The design will include river stabilization via hydraulics works and via soil bioengineering methods.
Examination methods: Two written partial exams (open questions) and presentation and discussion of a techinical report. Oral exam is possible to integrate or replace the 'in itinere' exams.
The technical report is mandatory.
Assessment criteria: Weights on the total mark: exam 85%, technical report 15%.
Course unit contents: Introduction to erosion and soil conservation in mountain areas. The watershed morphometry (1 CFU/ECTS).
Rainfall, runoff and design hydrograph. The concept of hydraulic invariance (land planning and works) (2 CFU/ECTS).
Sediment transport, and its dynamics and control in the river network (1 CFU/ECTS).
Initiation of sediment motion, equilibrium slope and stabilization slope of the river bed profile (1 CFU/ECTS).
Water erosion and sediment yield. Shallow landslide management: drainages and bioengineering works (1 CFU/ECTS).
River stabilization: check-dams, bed-sills, ramps. River bank stability matching engineering and bioengineering techniques. Flooding mitigation in urban areas (2 CFU/ECTS).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures (65%), excercises (PC-room) to support technical report preparation (35%).
The students, which can not attend practical classes (excercises), should contact the professor directly to achieve supplementary assistance and information.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Slides presented during the lectures are available.
