Syllabus
Prerequisites: The previous knowledge and skills necessary for a proficient course understanding are related with the animal biology and with the animal nutrition and feeding. However, no specific pass of these exams are required.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course students will acquire an understanding of dairy, beef and pigs husbandry considering effects of management procedures on quantity and quality of products, on environment and welfare of livestock.
Examination methods: The examination of students will be carried out through written test accounting for multiple choice questions, exercises and questions to be answered with a brief text production.
Assessment criteria: Students’ knowledge will be evaluated considering both specific definitions given during the course but also by analyzing their capacity of applying the acquired knowledge to simple operative problem solving.
Course unit contents: An overview on livestock rearing systems, with specific emphasis on intensive herds
Main dairy, dual purpose and beef cattle breeds reared in Italy.
Dairy production in Italy and European Union; national self supply and destination of raw milk; assessing milk quantity and quality; milk synthesis and eiection and milking procedures.
An introduction to feeding dairy and dry cows.
Husbandry and feeding replacement calves and dairy heifer husbandry.
An overview on reproduction management in dairy cows and fertility parameters.
Pig production in Italy: aims and problems. Management procedures and feeding schemes in typical italian pig,
Beef and veal calf production: rearing systems and feeding plans.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Direct room teaching activity and simple exercises on herd management parameters. External activities will consider visits to specific fairs and/or commercial farms. This with the aim of transferring the greater amount of practice skills to students.
