Syllabus
Prerequisites: This course is targeted to students in their third, fourth and fifth year who need to complete their B2 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You must have already reached a B1 level.
Target skills and knowledge: The main objective of the course is to help you improve your B2 level speaking skills by also broadening your knowledge of the terminology and discourse of English for educational purposes. During the course, your reading, speaking and writing skills will also be honed. By the end of the course, you will be able to use a range of appropriate vocabulary and linguistic structures to give and exchange views on a variety of topics belonging to your field of specialisation.
Examination methods: The final exam is a spoken interaction with a peer on the topics considered in class. You will choose the topics to be discussed during the interaction at random.
Assessment criteria: You will be assessed on your ability to discuss topics in the broad area of primary education by applying the corresponding terminology. You will be also assessed on your ability to initiate and respond appropriately, link your contribution to those of another speaker and organise your ideas clearly using discourse markers and cohesive devices.
The final evaluation will be “passed” or “not passed”.
Course unit contents: Following the aim of the course, which focuses on speaking skills and vocabulary development, various aspects of primary education will be covered in class, e.g. teacher training, teaching methods and learning styles, the use of technology and the Web, education and the present-day multicultural society.
Reading texts and audio-visual materials will be used to initiate in-class discussions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teacher-fronted lessons (12 hours) and workshop sessions led by a tutor (12 hours). You will be expected to do homework and actively participate in all classroom activities (working in pairs and groups). Attendance to the workshop sessions is compulsory.
