Syllabus
Prerequisites: You must have already reached a B1 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Therefore, you must have passed an English language test at B1 level for reading, listening, writing and speaking at the CLA or have a valid international certificate. A list of recognised certificate is available on the CLA website https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3qFD3Hwc1RwdUJOYmFLMEUzcjBhTXVRTHJZLUZZMDhEd09R/view.
Target skills and knowledge: During the course you will perfect your receptive skills in English (reading and listening) towards attaining the CEFR B2 level. You will also revise grammar areas and expand your knowledge of the vocabulary and discourse of English for educational purposes. In this way, you will improve your language skills in English and acquire competence in the disciplines of your university degree course.
Examination methods: The final exam is written and it covers all the topics in the book and presented in class. Exercises: multiple choice, cloze, true/false, translation, match, fill in the blanks, grid, listening and reading comprehension
Assessment criteria: You will be assessed on your ability to understand written and spoken texts belonging to the discourse of English for educational purposes and on your knowledge of the vocabulary of this domain.
The final evaluation will be “passed” or “not passed”. You will be rewarded with a “passed” evaluation if you reach a final score of 18/30 or higher.
Course unit contents: Following the practical and functional aims of the course, along with its focus on receptive skills and vocabulary development, various aspects of education will be covered in class, for instance: its origins and definitions, classroom management, teacher training, education in XXI Century and the use of technology. Written and spoken texts dealing with the education system in the UK and in other English speaking countries will also be used.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teacher-fronted lessons (12 hours) and practical activities led by a tutor (12 hours). You will be expected to actively participate in all classroom activities (working in pairs and groups).
Additional notes about suggested reading: Course material includes
1. the material available in Moodle
2. your notes
3. a self-study reference and practice book of your choosing for the revision of grammar areas (intermediate/upper-intermediate level)
4. a monolingual dictionary for advanced learners of your choosing (for example: Oxford, Cambridge UP, Collins, Macmillan)
